MR. CARMICHAEL LOSES LEG LEAVES POSITION AS HEAD AUROR

Head Auror Mr. James Carmichael suffered a catastrophic accident yesterday while conducting an investigation in a dubious part of wizarding York. Mr. Carmichael was reportedly collecting a simple witness report into an unknown incident when his assailant - aided by the as-of-yet unnamed witness - surprised him and destroyed his leg through the use of dark magic. The 'witness' and attacker both apparated away while one of Mr. Carmichael's fellow aurors extricated them both from the scene. There was nothing that healers at Hogsmeade Hospital could do for the leg, which had been too savagely damaged to be salvaged. "Though we can do many things with healing magic," said an anonymous healer who admitted Mr. Carmichael, "We cannot undo dark magic." _____________________________________________________________

Mr. Carmichael is expected to return to health. However, his missing limb means that the Head Auror must retire, and so his position of leadership in the Ministry has been vacated. Though our sources in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement could not confirm what Mr. Carmichael had been investigating, and neither would the employee who officially announced Mr. Carmichael's retirement, we have been told that the Department will not rest until it captures the dark wizards responsible for this horrific incident.
