LETTER TO THE EDITOR
WOULD PUBLIC PUNISHMENT DETER CRIMINALS? |
To the Editor, Crime has always been a problem, and honestly, it probably will always be with us, but it has long occurred to me that the fault might not lie entirely with the criminals themselves, but with our justice system. One would expect that the threat of Azkaban--which by all accounts is extremely unpleasant, even by prison standards--should be enough of a deterrent for anyone, but the fact that the prison doesn't currently stand empty is obvious testament to the fact that this isn't the case at all. _____________________________________________________________ |
It's obvious to me that the shame of this isn't enough. In the old days, criminals would be put on display for their neighbors to see and jeer at. Perhaps "jeer" is too base for the more gentile among us, but you can't deny we wouldn't stare! I understand it might seem cruel to some, but these sorts of public displays would surely be more of a help than a hindrance, and surely more of a help than our current system!
