Appearance:

• Mattie is told she has her mother’s height—a bit on the tall side, the witch stands at five feet, five inches. Hers is a particularly slender frame, with scarcely any curves to speak of. She is fair haired and fair skinned, with green eyes and pale lashes. Tilda dresses respectably for her station, but often likes to wear some sort of jewelry to dress it up a bit. She is left-handed, but was schooled to write with her right. Her voice is a bit deeper than one might expect from looking at her, but she sings beautifully—even if she could not play a proper instrument if her life depended on it. She walks with poise instilled in her by her father, who liked to have things just so.

History:

• 1858 | The summer sees the first—and ultimately only—child born to Caleb (a muggleborn footman) and June Ashby (a halfblooded schoolteacher), a girl they call Matilda after her late aunt, who had died that winter.
  
  1860 | June passes away so early in Mattie scarcely has memory of her.
  
  1864 | Matilda is almost six when her father announces his intentions to remarry. In her excitement, she accidentally blows herself up like a balloon—her first act of magic! Two months later, Caleb marries Dorothea, who Mattie quickly takes to.
  
  1865 | She is thrilled to be given a little brother! Tobias is born, but her excitement quickly fades as it becomes clear that an infant needs far more attention than a seven-year-old and, while not abandoned, she is left to her own devices moreso than before.
  
  1868 | Dorothea is pregnant again. Tobias, by now, is old enough to boss around, which Mattie finds she likes very much. Sadly, her stepmother passes away a fortnight after delivering twins Patrick and Liam.
  
  1869 | Mattie is invited to Hogwarts. With her father now a butler, he is able to afford to send her for her first year. She is sorted into Gryffindor—sadly, away from Cousin Marsha, who finds herself instead in Ravenclaw.
  
  1870 | At the end of her first year, the witch is awarded a partial scholarship for the following. With her siblings not yet old enough for school, Caleb is happy to have Mattie attend as long as she can get some financial help.
  
  1871 | Mattie picks up Muggle Studies and Care of Magical Creatures as her elective courses for her third year.
  
  1874 | The Gryffindor sees modest success on her OWLs, with a couple of E’s and one O, but the rest As or Ps. Unable to reclaim her earlier scholarship, Mattie leaves school. Uncle Matthew is able to find her a secretarial position with the company he works for, Wilde Enterprises.
  
  1876 | Tobias starts at school. He is sorted into _____. Mattie is moved to a more specific position, her bright mind earning her the spot of secretary to company vice president, Polonius Plum. Though she enjoys her work, her boss is quite tiresome.
  
  1879 | Caleb’s lung problems eventually cause his death in March, and at the end of the school year, it is decided Tobias will not return. Uncle Matthew offers to take the boys in, but Matilda is not keen to be separated from what family she has left. With Mattie having recently obtained her apparition licence, the family relocates to Hogsmeade, so that Tobias can work in the stables of a public coach company. Between a need scholarship, death benefits from Caleb, and Mattie’s creative budgeting, both twins are able to go to Hogwarts in the fall. Liam is sorted into _____, and Patrick into _____.
  
  1881 | Unable to gain even a partial scholarship, Patrick has to leave school, while Liam’s full scholarship all but ensures he will be able to follow his dream of becoming an auror.
  
  1883 | Tobias is promoted to a proper coachman. Mr. Wilde dies, leaving the future of the company temporarily up in the air—Mattie can’t help but notice a shift in Mr. Plum’s mood when Alexander Wilde is selected as president, rather than he.
