*Takes place a week before Christmas Break - December of 1883*
Stay focused, Sepehy!, the young blonde scolded herself as she stared furiously at the large Runes volume before her, her mind attempting to comprehend the foreign language, but unfortunately, the effort seemed to be in vain since she was far too distracted to think clearly. Even more unfortunate was the fact that the origins of her distracted state of mind was due to the handsome man sitting across from her, a book of his own situated before him, but she did not even need to look up from her book to know that his mind was also straying from the task at hand - and quite frankly, it irritated her to no end.
They were meant to be studying together for their respective classes, and instead he was sitting there - looking far more attractive than she should be, she might add - appearing quite bored, and she could feel his eyes upon her form every time he looked up from his book to stare at her, but once he was caught he would refocus his attention onto his schoolwork. Unfortunately for August, however, Persephone was not fooled - she knew that he could not focus, which in turn, also caused her to be unable to concentrate, as well.
“And how are your studies coming along?,” she finally inquired, lifting her eyes from the textbook and throwing him a knowing glance. She would make the effort to conceal her irritation as she was aware that August was mostly committing to this study session for her benefit (and she quite appreciated him for it), but it would be exceedingly difficult. However, in the furthest confines of her conscience, a little voice informed her that her annoyance was irrational, but she ignored it and awaited August’s answer, her crystal-blue eyes focused upon his face.

This was awful. Why wasn’t there a class completely dedicated to the history of Quidditch or something? Flipping to the next page in his Herbology book though, August tried to remain focused on the task at hand. This was a part of a deal and it would hardly be fair if he didn’t hold up his end of the wager. He had forced Persephone into watching a Quidditch match with him. ‘There was no way she didn’t enjoy it though.’ August thought to himself as the idea of anyone not embracing Quidditch on a personal level seemed ludacris. Glancing up from his coursebook, August looked over Persephones features while she studied her own text. How was she able to enjoy this so much? She didn’t look distracted at all and here he was barely able to keep his eyes open.
Shifting his eyes back downwards before she’d notice that he was staring, August continued to read more and more into plants and their respective woods. Now why was it always about wands? There had to be certain woods that made for better brooms! Growing irritated, August found himself staring idly at a picture while he thought back to a Quidditch article he’d been reading that morning. Thanks to his memory he was able to remember the piece word for word, and it was suddenly as if he were living in the moment of the story and could see the players on their brooms. The sound of Persephone suddenly speaking out of the blue jolted him back down to reality though and caused him to jump a little in his seat.
“Ah! Ummmm... great!” A smile flashed across his face as he attempted to cover up his moment of daydreaming. Thinking back to the woods he’d just been reading about, August slurred some words together in an attempt to appear as if he’d been completely zoned in at the task at hand. “Apparently there’s five different plant families for all the different wand woods.” August tried to make it seem as if this knowledge were actually an interesting fact to come across. “Seems a bit unfair really that they only speak about wands. I mean, I’m sure a broommaker has to go through a lot of thought processes in which wood is going to produce the best kind of Quidditch broom.” The dip into Quidditch couldn’t be helped and the passion in August’s voice started to come through in full swing. A bit too much actually that some of the student’s near them turned their heads and August in relativization of his volume gave Persephone an apologetic smile. “Sorry.” His own blue eyes left hers as he looked down in embarrassment that he hadn’t made it through one study session without mentioning Quidditch.

Persephone rose a delicate eyebrow at his response, not quite believing that he was speaking the truth, but she opted to not state as such for she did not wish to lecture him in that moment. It seemed to her that lecturing him was all she ever seemed to do when she was in his presence, and she resolved to limit her harangue for when it was absolutely necessary. Poor August must have already received plenty of scoldings over the years while living with his mother and sisters, and she had no wish to be counted among them for they seem to drive him to madness - or so she has heard, in any case. She still had yet to become acquainted with any of August’s elder sisters, but she knew Miss January Lynch by sight due sharing a year of study together. However, this was largely due to the fact that they had been placed in different houses, and Persephone had never saw any reason to broaden her social range beyond those of her own house and the occasional Ravenclaw - although, since she had become acquainted with August, she was beginning to realize that the other houses had the potential of keeping her entertained, as well.
However, she had to stifle a giggle as August spoke, his topic of conversation turning from the five plant categories of wand woods to the woods in which broomsticks were made from. It amused her that even when he was studying a subject in which should have no relevance to Quidditch whatsoever, August still managed to find a connection between the two - his studies and his passion, which she noted with further amusement became louder and more pronounced as he spoke, that same enthusiastic sparkle within his eyes that Persephone was beginning to become familiar with.
He can’t help that he loves the sport, she thought as she leaned forward, and responded in a respectfully quiet tone, “It’s fine, August.” Though she still desired to challenge him, and it was with a tiny smirk that she inquired, “Have you learned anything interesting about the wood of your own wand, or has your mind been solely focused upon Quidditch?”

As Persephone spoke and said that it was quite alright, August couldn’t help but perk up a bit. She wasn’t mad! Not that August had expected her to get angry, it’s just that if this was his normal study group with February he knew she’d probably be scolding him right now for disturbing others while they worked. The perking up started to shift down though as Persephone now began to inquire about what he’d learned regarding his own wand or if he’d only been thinking of Quidditch. It was a tricky question because while he had actually been reading his Herbology book, the distraction of Quidditch had preoccupied him before he’d actually gotten to the plant family that his own wand had belonged to.
Trying to not miss a beat, August fished out his wand from his robes pocket and set it on the table between them. The abnormally long wood of the wand looked almost dull because August hardly carried for it like he would a broomstick and there was visibly smudged fingerprints riddled across it that had probably been there for years. “I have been reading thank you very much!” August smugly replied with a teasingly raised eyebrow. “It just so happens that you interrupted me before I got to my own wands wood!” Half a lie because the picture had come first, but in reality the picture was just before the Betulaceae family listing which was where his wand would be under.
August began to read where he’d left off in his book to showoff the fact that is was actually the next thing in his coursebook. “Hornbeam - A wood that selects it’s life mate in a witch or wizard who possess a single yet pure passion that can almost considered an obsession. The ‘vision’ of said witch or wizard will almost always be realized.” There was more listed beyond that but August was way to busy gawking at his wand now to continue speaking. Pure delight seemed to be washing over his face as he looked from his wand up to Persephone. “It choose me because Quidditch is my dream!”

“If you say so,” Sephey responded with a slight chuckle at August’s smug response, not quite believing that he had been thoroughly examining his Herbology textbook, but she refrained from making her assumptions known - there was no need to scold him for a task that he evidently disliked, but she was still confident that it would be something he would benefit from if he tried - which she was glad to note he seemed to be doing. It was the effort put forth into studying that counted, after all.
However, what she was not pleased to note was that, once again, she could not seem to stay annoyed with him for long. Her irritation at his lack of focus had dispersed as fast as it had come, and she could quite comprehend as to the reason why this continued to occur. Indeed, he possessed that personality in which was difficult to detest (unless one counted his vexing obsession with Quidditch), but she had never believed that a person could be quite so likeable that it would render it impossible to be continuously furious at.
Heaving an inaudible sigh, and running one of her fingers along the spine of one of the thick volumes adjacent her, Persephone listened respectfully to his explanation of his respective wand wood, and she could not resist the smile that widened with each word. Once again, he had managed to make Quidditch relevant to the conversation at hand, and she could not help but be endlessly amused by it. He really was a Quidditch fanatic at heart, and it was with a tiny laugh and a shake of her head at his obvious delight of his conclusion that she answered in a complimenting tone, “Hornbeam is a very good wand. They are most suited to those with capacious personalities - which I very much believe you possess - so it is not just your obsession with Quidditch that the wand chose you, but your overall personality, as well.”
“And interestingly enough,” Persephone continued, remembering a conversation that had occurred during one of her Ancient Studies lectures, “Hornbeam does not follow the Celtic calender, which is often used to match wand woods to people of magical blood according to their birthdays.”

August chuckled as Persephone tried to convince him that his wand had chosen him for more than just his unusually strong love for Quidditch. “Quidditch may as well be my personality.” It was hard to not tease her with such things since he knew the fact that everything came back to Quidditch for him had to be at least mildly annoying. The detouring mention of the Celtic calendar seemed puzzling though, and out of curiosity August started to flip through his coursebook to see if there was some reference of it since the book was already going on about wand woods. “What does it mean if it doesn’t follow the calendar?” August asked while he still continued on in his search for a written answer. “Maybe,” now he was really just trying to be as childish as possible, “the ‘pure passion’ factor - which lets be honest has to be Quidditch - was just so strong in me that I was simply above some silly calendar’s recommendations.” Jokingly now August took on a noble demeanor and stuck his nose up in the air as if he some kind of fancy prince.
All the talk about wands was actually becoming interesting though so August raised a questioning eyebrow up at Persephone. “What about you?” He suddenly propped his book up so that she wouldn’t be able to read anything from the pages. “Tell me what wood your wand is made of and I’ll inform you of the destined fate your wand had predetermined in you when you were eleven.” August tried to making his voice as mysteriously vexing as possible as if he were about to do a serious tea leaf reading of her. It was probably the only good thing that had come from September and November; he knew how to act like some hocus-pocus wannabe seer for a performance piece.

“I don’t believe that it means anything - just that your wand is unique in that it does not follow the Celtic calender,” Persephone answered matter-of-factly as she reached into her bag to pull out a sheet of parchment, an eagle-feathered quill, and an inkpot. If she was meant to be studying, then she might as well get a bit of work done, despite the fact that the Ancient Runes essay was not expected to be turned in until the end of the week. However, she had never been particularly good at multitasking, and she continued with the conversation on wands, “However, should it ease your concerns, my own wand does not follow the Celtic calender either.” She threw him a tiny smile.
Peeking up from her Ancient Runes assignment to assess the childishness that was written upon his handsome face (her mind reacting negatively to the fact that she even found him attractive at all), Persephone smiled and shook her head, but made no comment. It was true that Quidditch defined August’s overall personality, but she knew better than to believe such nonsense - there was more to the man than merely an obsession, but she was still reluctant to give him the wrong impression that perhaps she fancied him - which was the honest truth, but she had no intentions of admitting it in the near future, not even to her own self.
At the inquiry of her own wand, Persephone laid down her quill, and gave him her full attention and a small, amused smile. If August desired to make predictions as if he were interested in Divination - ghastly subject, in her opinion - then she would happily indulge. “Well,” she began with a bit of a sigh, “the wood my wand is made from is Walnut. According to the information given in the textbook, Walnut wands choose witches or wizards who are intelligent, as well as versatile and adaptable. While some wands tend to be temperamental, but the same cannot be said for Walnut wands as, once defeated by its owner, they will perform spells without hesitation - which I am proud to admit has been the case with my own wand.”

As Persephone listed off all the facts pertaining to her own wand, Augusts face fell a bit into a slight pout. Here he was going to take a note out of September and Novembers book of horrid fake predictions and she was taking all the fun right out of it! “Sounds like your wand is a bit of a snob.” August teased through his look of disappointment before letting out a dramatic sigh and dropping his book. “We’ve been studying for what feels like ages!” As he complained he leaned back in his chair so that it was balancing on its hind legs - hardly a display of proper behavior. “Isn’t there something fun we can learn about?” It almost felt like a trick question. How could there possibly be anything that was fun to study?
Sifting through his brain for something, anything, August suddenly thought of something and came slamming back down onto the four legs of his seat. It was a loud enough thump that heads turned again to glare at the rowdy Gryffindor. “Have you heard of people that can change into animals?!” His excitement rang clear because really, who didn’t find that awesome? “My Uncle is able to do it! Although I’ve never seen it myself before, but I’ve heard my parents mention bits about it. Guess he even uses it for his job! Goes out in the wilderness for months and spies on beasts or something for Ministry research.” August decided it was best not to mention the fact that the whole thing seemed to make his Uncle a touch twitchy when he came round after a trip.

A hint of a smirk formed onto Persephone's lips as she listened to August's kind compliments upon her wand, taking no heed of his disappointment. Personally, she was rather proud of the wand she was in possession of. It was a handsome, domineering wand that she believed suited her quite nicely, and therefore, August's ridiculing comment meant very little to her. However, she could not possibly allow him to tease her about her wand when his also contained a strong personality of its own, and she teasingly retorted, "And your wand sounds rather fickle - obsessions can unhealthy, you know?" She threw him a joking smile before returning to her Ancient Runes assignment, beginning the outline of her essay.
"Well, I suppose we could take a break," Persephone said slowly as she pushed away the beginning stages of her essay outline - she was far too distracted to be able to focus upon schoolwork anyway, so why make poor August suffer on her behalf? Besides, her company was far more entertaining than any textbook could provide at the moment, and she'd rather stare socialize with him, to become further acquainted. She rather liked August, which was strange because he was the last person she would expect to find herself fancying, but she attempted to squash all thoughts of her increasing fondness for him because she found the whole ordeal quite nonsensical. August was merely a friend, and perhaps that is all he ever would be to her, though a little part of her desired for their relationship to be more than it currently was.
"Can he now?," Persephone inquired, intrigued by the information that had just been relayed. Animagi was a subject that had always fascinated her, and while she currently has no intentions of delving into the study in the near future, it was something she was hoping to one day accomplish. "Do you know what kind of animal your uncle transforms into?," she asked eagerly before continuing, "What field of work does he commit to?" She had also desired to ask how his uncle had become interested in the study of Animagi, and how he benefited from it, but she highly doubted that August would know the answers to her questions, and so she kept them to herself.

August raised his eyebrow slightly towards Persephones eagerness over the information of his Uncle. Quite possibly a ping of jealously crossed over him too, but August knew it was silly for anyone to be jealous of the awkwardness that his Uncle walked around as. “One of my sisters mentioned it being kind of a wolf that looks like a fox.” August zoned out slightly as he used his vast memory bank to attempt some sort of real name for the animal his Uncle turned into. Apparently nothing had been mentioned before though - it wasn’t like his Uncle was much of a social person and came round often anyways. “Hmmm... yeah I can’t recall a proper name for it but it's some foreign wolf that's freakishly tall! Try to imagine a fox on stilts and I reckon you’d be close to what he looks like.” It seemed he was actually going to have something to talk to his Uncle about should he grace their dinner table at some point over the holidays with his presence.
“All I know is that he travels the world for beasts and is gone for months at a time. The animagus bit makes it easier to get closer to the beasts without frightening them since he can apparently communicate with them. How amazing is that?” August wondered if it looked bad that he had no idea what his Uncle really did but considering the job had nothing to do with Quidditch it seemed justified for him to not really care. While he had no idea what his Uncle truly did, August could recalled a conversation thats information Persephone probably have no clue about. “Did you know you can find out what animal you’d change into if you were to become an animagus?” A sort of ‘know-it-all’ smirk came to Augusts lips as he tried to make the whole question seem mysterious and interesting.

"A maned fox?," Persephone suggested after August failed to recall his uncle's animagus form, and although her own conclusion was a rough guess, the only animal that came to mind that was a "freakishly tall" wolf who possessed the features of a fox was a maned fox. However, the subject of his uncle's animagus form was not nearly as intriguing as the fact that he had even accomplished becoming one at all! Persephone was truly curious about the successes and misadventures during his studies, and had a good amount of questions that she desired to ask him, but she was aware that it would be odd if she decided to send him a letter full of inquiries when she was not even acquainted with him - though the image of a grown man receiving a letter with a ton of questions from a fifteen-year-old girl rather amused her, and she hid a smile at the thought.
"How fascinating!," Persephone exclaimed in a hushed tone so as to not disturb the two girls who were seated a few tables away. His uncle's occupation sounded delightful, and she was certain that the man had plenty of tales to regale his nieces and nephew with, and she could only imagine how riveting those adventures must be. "Does your uncle study beasts or does he tend them?," she inquired after a moment, still in awe of how wonderful his uncle's occupation sounded, and how much she desired to travel the world herself.
"Indeed!," she answered to his inquiry, her eyes shining. Now decidedly more enthusiastic than she had been throughout their entire study period, Persephone was eager to spend more time on the subject of Animagi and August's uncle's occupation, for it was not everyday that she discovered an individual who had successfully accomplished the trial and errors of Animagi. "Are you aware that your animagus form is usually your patronus form, as well?" She adopted August's 'know-it'all' attitude as she spoke, feeling as if this was about to become a battle of whose knowledge was greater.

“Hmmm maybe?” August grinned while shrugging at the mentioned name because he really had no clue what the exact name to his Uncle’s ‘wolf’ self was. It wasn’t like there’d been some in depth course on wolf breeds in Care of Magical Creatures for him to have learned such things - unless of course he’d fallen asleep during it. “Just studies I think. He doesn’t come round to much though, and even when he does he doesn’t talk about himself so it could be possible that he tends to them too.” Was it normal for one to get this jealous over someone else’s occupation apparently being the most amazing thing in the world? It hardly seemed fair because Quidditch was an amazing and interesting occupation too! “I didn’t realize you’d find his job so interesting!” He attempted to play it cool by chuckling at her, “ Is it a field you’re wanting to go into yourself or something?”
Pouting as it came as no shock that Persephone knew the small bit of knowledge that he did, August sighed in defeat. There was no way he could win any kind of ‘know-it-all’ battle against this girl. “Seriously woman is there anything you don't know?” Despite probably sounding vaguely annoyed, the corner of his mouth was still perked up into a smile that he was attempting to hide. “And yes I am aware that it’s normally the same form as your patronus.” Here August was thinking perhaps she’d have been impressed that a failure such as himself knew such a fact, but alas he was no match for her book smarts. He really was going to be doomed after his prime Quidditch years were over.
"It's to bad mastering such a spell would take ages." It was one of those things that was over before it had even started - spells already took ages for him, let alone the ones that were considered 'hard'. "Would be kind of fun to know what your 'inner' animal is though." August stated almost dreamily as he pictured a wispy and pearlescent lion coming from his wand. Flashing Persephone a sly smirk now, August leaned back in his chair to balance on the hind legs again before adding some fuel to the fire. "I bet my animal would put yours to shame with how marvelous it would be."

Persephone merely shrugged at August's inquiry - though the expression of interest and awe never vanished - not quite sure why she found his uncle's occupation so intriguing, and knowing for a fact that she did not desire to delve into such a field. However, feeling as if she should elaborate, she stated, "I suppose what I find most compelling about his occupation is that it enables him to frequently travel the world, a wish of mine that I've harbored for quite a long while. The only places I have ever been to or resided within are Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands, and so I do desire to explore beyond the destinations that I am familiar with."
Feeling slightly sympathetic at his pout, Persephone flashed him a small, apologetic smile. She was, of course, smug that her knowledge of Animagi was extensive enough that she could respond to his inquiry with ease, but she did so dislike to witness his crestfallen face - and once again, Persephone was shocked to discover that any irritation she had towards him and his stupid, pretty face had dispersed, and it still baffles her greatly.
However, despite her sympathy, August's sly smile along with his next words caused her to smirk and to raise a questioning eyebrow. "Is that a challenge, Mr. Lynch?," she impishly inquired, amused by his statement.

“You know if you brushed up on some solid broom skills you could fly to different places. I know silly ways of travel like portkeys and apparating exist but, lemme tell you, there’s nothing quite like seeing the world from up above like a bird.” Grinning as, without missing a beat, he had managed to bring brooms and the such back into the conversation, August spread his arms out slightly to mimic a bird and further add emphasis on his point. Although he did keep it short because it seemed it was hard for his odd ways -not- to attract attention and he didn’t want people to think Persephone was associating with a complete nutter. Only Nate a few Hufflepuffs were given such a delightful treatment.
As the conversation turned into the mention of a challenge, August found himself in a tough spot. It was hard not to accept almost any kind of challenge [something that over the years had resulted in quite a few troublemaking incidents for him]. This type of challenge however involved real work... and not just merely doing something stupid for some good laughs. Plus it wasn’t like he could really win against someone so academically inclined. She’d probably have the spell mastered ages before he could even hope to get anything that resembled an animal. They’d have to make an eighth year just for him to even be around to show her.
The sight of her smirk and raised eyebrow made it impossible to turn down though. He’d would just have to treat this in the same competitive ways he would Quidditch - and hope his obsessive nature would help out in the end. “I don’t know, you aren’t going to go off crying when you get out shined are you?” Smugly beaming over at Persephone, August shrugged slightly before adding in the extra punch to get under her skin. “I mean girls are so fragile... I’d feel awful if you end up in tears once I win with my amazingly giant lion.” He doubted she was the type to cry easily but also hoped Persephone wasn’t hiding some kind of sensitive side either. August knew he would actually feel utterly horrible to be the one responsible for bringing a girl like Persephone to tears - although he still wasn't quite sure why.

Sephey chuckled when the conversation was soon steered back to broomsticks and flying -- the boy really was obsessed, wasn't he? -- and her smile only widened when he began mimicking a flying bird. This man was so silly, which both endeared him to her and annoyed her. On the one hand, it was always beneficial to have a friend who was as lighthearted and entertaining as August was, but then on the other, she often wanted to smack him upside the head with a book (at least it would cover those distracting blue eyes of his).
“Hmmm…,” Persephone mused as August mentioned flying as another method of traveling. It was certainly a different, if not unique, way of traveling, and although she never considered herself to be the adventurous type, it would be an experience that she would not pass up the chance to try – the idea of seeing the world through the eyes of an airborne bird sounded freeing, and Merlin knew that the taste of freedom always tasted sweet. “Perhaps if I had a proficient flying instructor,” she eyed him pointedly, her blonde eyebrows raising perceptibly, “I would endeavor to hone my flying skills, for I must admit that they are not up to par.”
She smirked amusedly at his teasing jab, refusing to allow his words to crawl under her skin. Outshined? Her? Never. She had enough confidence and faith in herself and her wand-casting abilities that she would eventually succeed that his words had very little effect on her, though her amusement soon ebbed away when he began to speak ill of her sex, claiming that they were fragile creatures. She was aware that he was merely joking, of course, but verbally insinuating that women were emotional human beings whose needs must be catered to quite unnerved her, though she said nothing to admonish him or prove him incorrect, instead chuckling at his assumption that his animagus was a loud and proud lion.
“I can assure you, Mr. Ly--“ Persephone paused as she corrected herself, still not quite comfortable referring to him by his first name as he had requested her to, her ladylike sensibilities still ever-present, “ August, that I am not so fragile as I may appear, so much that I’m afraid that perhaps you might need to prepare yourself for my marvelous animagus, whatever it is, for it’s sure to be nothing but the best.” She winked at him to show that she was teasing, a smirk still tugging at the corner of her lips.

August perked up an almost surprised eyebrow as Persephone mentioned that she could consider working on her flying skills if she had a experienced enough flying instructor. Okay, he wasn’t the brightest tea leaf in the cup, but was she suggesting that he teach her? “Truly a tragedy.” August smirked at her because, really, it was a tragedy for anyone to not be graced with decent flying skills. The world didn’t need anymore Nate Wilde’s plummeting around towards the ground. “If only there was some bloke that could help you perfect such a skill.” Trying to play it cool August merely shrugged, although a smile did however stay on his face the whole time. August wasn’t quite sure why, but he wanted her to ask him to teach her - if that’s even what Persephone was really getting at.
Hearing her correction to his first name and steering away from all that proper nonsense made August chuckle. “Well Persephone,” He teased her name out to slightly mock her almost mistake. “I find it hard to see you as anything but fragile. Tiny little thing that you are.” August gestured with a wave of his hand towards her as if their height difference could really be noticed with the both of them sitting. Sure, everyone was tiny in Augusts eyes because he’d been granted the gift of being a freak of nature with his height, but it was ever amusing to see the small blonde only make it up to his chest. Maybe he should suggest a walk sometime, but he wasn’t sure how he could sell it to her without studying being involved somehow.
“Sounds like coursework is going to have to wait for another boring day!” Almost gleefully, August closed the few books that he had out on the table and tucked them into his bag. “Because I do believe we have a challenge on our hands.” Despite the fact that he was probably walking into his own failure, all of it felt like success for the moment since it meant the studying was done and he wouldn’t have to read a single thing about wands again for at least a few days. “Where do you suggest we go anyways?” Augusts expression changed to confusion for a moment because actively practicing spells wasn’t exactly a thing he did outside of class. The end result left him standing there a bit dumbstruck as he waited for Persephone to comply to the fact that this was happening right now and to lead the way.
