    Appearance:
    • Broad-shouldered and a towering six feet, four inches, Cliff’s physical appearance has always served him well—first as a beater, and then as an auror. A reduction in activity since Tabitha’s death has seen a small paunch develop around his midsection, but he insists that it is ‘typical for a man of his experience to put on extra padding’. Though his resting face as is a stern one, his mouth gives easily to grins, and pronounced crows’ feet around his eyes reveal a lifetime of frequent laughter.

His hair, once a deep jet in color, has been lightened substantially with the decades—as has his occasional matching beard. Cliff’s eyes are a deep brown, set beneath healthy eyebrows. Were one to see him naked, it would be hard to miss the scars that freckle his body from years of work, and his nose has plainly been broken three times over—once by a bludger while at Hogwarts, once by a bludger during his professional career, and once by a punch in a drunken bar fight.

Clifton favours simple black robes (with nothing underneath) unless he absolutely must dress up for an occasion. His voice, a deep baritone, often belts out this song and that when he’s had a bit to drink. His left leg causes a slight limp in damp weather, but otherwise he walks with long strides. He is right-handed.
    History:
    • PRE-BIRTH | A second son, however wealthy his family, should always find good work well before considering marriage. It was a fact that had been drummed into Orson Avery since he was a mere toddler, but a fact he proceeded to ignore entirely when Miss Solaris Burke, a housemate of his from his Hogwarts days, smiled sweetly to him at some ball or another not long after her debut. Though it took some time to persuade her father to his way of thinking, he was eventually granted her hand in marriage—though he was scarcely established in his profession and could not afford to maintain the upper class lifestyle in which he was raised.

| A year and a half after marrying, Solaris Avery delivers her first child, a son called Clifton, in northern England.

| Another boy joins the Avery household, this time called Cedric.

| The time comes for Clifton to begin his education. Mathematics bore him endlessly, but history—likely because of his father’s path as a historian—fascinates him. His first act of magic sees him summon a wooden soldier from the nursery to the parlour.

| A premature delivery sees the stillbirth of Cliff’s sister, Rowena. Though he never sees his sister’s body, he is pulled into mourning nonetheless, and does not care for it in the slightest.

| Solaris delivers a third son, later christened Isaac.

| At last, Cliff departs for Hogwarts! He is immensely proud when he follows the footsteps of both parents into Gryffindor, having decided years earlier that it must be the superior house.

| His third year sees the Gryffindor pick up Ancient Studies as his sole elective. He tries out for, but does not make, the house quidditch team.

| In his fourth year his quidditch dreams come true: a successful tryout sees Clifton the new Gryffindor beater.

| Exceptional grades and a strong reputation see Cliff named prefect for his house, and it is around this time that he wishes play quidditch professionally when he completes his schooling. This is also Cedric’s first year at Hogwarts; the lad is sorted into Hufflepuff.

| Clifton achieves strong OWLs, and elects to continue with Ancient Studies, History of Magic, Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, and Herbology.

| In February, a bludger gives Cliff his first broken nose. Later in the year, it is a pleasant surprise to learn that he has been named Head Boy for his final year at Hogwarts.

| Clifton completes his schooling with exceptional grades, and is happily taken on by the Chudley Cannons as a second string beater.

| After three years (and a second broken nose), Clifton still has not reached third string. Deciding that this is a sign to find a sounder career, he applies for—and, thankfully, is accepted into—the Ministry of Magic’s auror training program. Isaac starts at Hogwarts, and is sorted into Hufflepuff.

| Cedric finishes his schooling, and signs on as a curse breaker with Gringotts. In the fall, a raucous night out with some of his fellow trainees earns Clifton a third broken nose.

| After completing his training, Clifton becomes a full auror. With a reasonable income at last, Cliff is able to move out of his childhood home, having saved (…and drank) much of his income over the previous years.

| Isaac moves to London to work at St. Mungo’s.

| Pulled out of school after her OWLs to find a husband, a young Patience Weasley catches Cliff’s eye at a dinner party. Quite taken with the redhead, the two begin courting not long after, and are wed by year’s end.

| In the summer, Patience presents him with their first child: a daughter with his dark hair, named for the season of her birth.

| The summer solstice brings with it a son to the happy couple, called Vernon and sharing his mother’s red locks. Cedric marries in August.

| A bout of pneumonia early in spring lasts for weeks, and ultimately takes Patience’s life. A distraught Clifton hurls himself into his work, with rash behaviour almost getting him killed more than once. Later that year, Clifton’s first niece, Edith, is born.

| It seems that dinner parties are a good place to meet women: it is at yet another banquet that he becomes acquainted with Miss Tabitha Gamp, a chaser for the Holyhead Harpies. By the end of the year, the two have begun a tentative courtship.

| Clifton and Tabitha marry in October.

| Cedric’s second daughter, Mercy, becomes Cliff’s second niece.

| After becoming pregnant, Tabitha retires from quidditch. The winter solstice sees the birth of Cliff’s second daughter, called Winter. It is a playful nod to his late wife that sees him carry on that particular naming tradition.

| Summer departs for school. Like her mother was, she is sorted into Hufflepuff.

| Fall brings with it a third daughter, Autumn.

| Vernon leaves for Hogwarts, following his father’s (and grandfather’s) footsteps into Gryffindor.

| Tabitha delivers her first son—and last child—Wilder.

| Summer graduates, and proves quite popular after her debut. In November, a gentleman asks Clifton’s permission to court her, but Cliff does not think the fellow stable enough to take a wife.

| Cliff manages to get stabbed in the leg during an arrest. Though he recovers full use of it, it brings about a mild limp in damp weather. For the second time, a gentleman asks for permission to court Summer—this one a fellow auror! Clifton declares (rather hypocritically) that aurors don’t make good husbands, and refuses him…and two more suitors that year.

| Vernon completes his schooling with strong grades. Clifton is surprised (pleasantly so) to learn that his son has decided to pursue a career as an auror.

| Another man is finally brave enough to ask permission to court Summer. With some reluctance, Clifton agrees.

| Tabitha is out flying when a particularly abrupt storm rolls in; she falls from her broomstick to her death. Though distressed by her passing, age has brought some maturity to Clifton—instead of throwing himself into his work as he once did, he retires to the less dangerous occupation of teacher, not wishing to orphan any of his children. Overwrought with grief, Summer brings about an abrupt end to her courtship, declaring she shall not see her beau again (two years later, he marries another woman). That September, Winter starts at Hogwarts.

| After attempting to remove a curse on a particularly tricky Egyptian tomb, the walls cave in, burying Cedric alive. Clifton refuses another suitor for Summer, whose popularity has dwindled as her years have increased. Autumn leaves for Hogwarts.

| Edith marries. Summer, drawing perilously near to spinsterhood, begins serving as chaperone for Mercy, Winter, and Autumn. Wilder leaves for Hogwarts in September.

| Clifton all but laughs in the face of a bachelor older even then him who seeks permission to court Summer.

| Mercy marries.
