Baby's First Duel [Intro DADA]

Open to ALL students in years one and two!

With the dueling tournament just a couple of short weeks away, Nikolai had decided it would be in the best interests of his first years to learn how to duel—and in the best interests of the second years to have a refresher. For an added set of eyes, he had enlisted the help of Mrs. Bennett (though, unaware as to who knew what of her professional history, had opted not to share her qualifications with his students) to help watch things.

He had explained at length the basic premise, as well as made it clear that, while they would be dueling properly today, the young ladies would not be allowed to use combative magic during the tournament.

“And now, I think it’s time you try for yourselves,” the professor offered, gesturing to the cleared section of floor before him, and the one to the rear of the room where the Ravenclaw matron awaited. “Any takers?”

First years have learned how to disarm and tickle from Nik, as well as whatever they cover in their other classes. They have NOT been taught the shield charm, but second years have! Please tag Nik or Rosaline Bennett to receive a moderation—this way we can have two pairs running at once! Students to complete a duel will earn 10 house points.

First person steps forward to cast, second person comes cast against them. Both should tag their moderator of choice—ideally one not already busy ;)

[Seneca Lestrange]

At days like this, Defense Against The Dark Arts was her favourite class. Any excuse to use her beloved stinging hex was welcome. It was a pity that she couldn’t use what was on the way of becoming her signature spell at the dueling tournaments. No, she had to break her head over what kind of ornamental magic to do next at those.

Seneca was one of the first to step up when Professor Sleptov asked for volunteers. She stood opposite her opponent and once the obligatory bowing and curtsying was out of the way, she cast the stinging hex.

[Liam Harvey]

Oooo, dueling! Liam thought that this was an amazing idea, and so when Professor Sleptov asked for volunteers he literally leapt at the chance. He didn't care who the other person was, and he was totally fine with facing up against Miss Lestrange.

Once the duel had begun, Liam cast his rudimentary second-year shield charm.

Nikolai was surprised to see the flimsy-looking shield charm hold up to Miss Lestrange’s advances—he had seen her use the stinging hex on multiple occasions previously, and knew it to be quite good. With Mr. Harvey the obvious winner of the first round, he bid the lad to begin the next.

Hey, he'd managed it! Liam was somewhat surprised, but he pulled himself quickly back together and cast a tickling charm. After all, he hardly wanted to hurt Miss Lestrange!

Topaz stepped forward and offered a shy smile at Mrs. Bennett. She wasn't at all sure she particularly liked dueling, but she supposed she would have to at least tolerate it if she were to do well in Professor Sleptov's class!

[Guppy Travers]

Guppy was not so squeamish as to be opposed to fighting girls—particularly when they were the daughter of the Minister of Magic and so almost certainly snobby little know-it-alls—and was horribly excited to be dueling, so the Gryffindor had practically detatched his own arm to wave it higher and get an early opportunity to partake.

With no practical skill in the subject whatsoever, he fired a disarming spell at the Ravenclaw, half-hoping it would misfire and blow something up. Explosions were fun.

Seneca was not pleased to have lost to a muggleborn of all people. Two years ago he probably didn’t even know what a wand was! The defeat hurt Seneca’s pride. She could do better than that.

She cast a shield charm.

Nik winced on Miss Lestrange’s behalf.

“As you can see,” he said to the class waiting their own turn as the Slytherin fell victim to inescapable tickling, “Mr. Harvey has quite clearly won the duel. Ten points to each of you for being such good sports—now who’s next?”

Rose was more than happy to be participating in this little exercise. Miss Urquart's spell had the first year rigid, and Rose undid it with a wave of her wand and a muttered finite incantatem. "Mr. Travers, you may begin the second round," she said with a bright smile.

Guppy did not like losing to a girl. Scowling, he cast a bat bogey hex.

Rather pleased with herself, Topaz flashed a winning smile and cast a shield charm against the first year's bat bogeys.

Once more, Miss Urquart prevailed - though neither the hex nor the shield charm were particularly impressive. It got the job done, though. "Miss Urquart is the winner!" Rose announced cheerfully.

  

[Ruby Urquart]

Ruby didn't like inflicting pain on others, so dueling was not among her favourite things. Still, watching her twin duel inspired her and besides, Hufflepuff could use some points. They weren't doing that great lately.

She cast the tickling charm on her opponent.
