She wasn't crying. Charlotte had welcomed the reprieve from the noise, from the sharp stare of disappointment from her mother, but that had been an hour ago—hours maybe, and Béatrice was still silent.
In her moments of weakness she had prayed that this would happen but she had never meant it, not really, and her heart constricted as her steps grew heavier, faster, up the stairs, not that it would do any good. In her heart she knew what she would find. That this was never meant to be.
Béatrice wasn't breathing, and there was nothing she knew, the knowledge breaking her as she sank wailing to the floor, that she could do to save her.
She was already gone.
