Appearance: 5'7" tall, rather slender, medium-length blonde hair, brown eyes, generally seen wearing shabby and worn-out Sunday suits and a bowler hat, wearing a tailcoat during performances.
History: Growing up as the only child of a successful hatmaker family in Edinburgh, he had an uneventful and protected childhood. His mother had died when Chuck was young, cutting off the family's ties to the wizarding world. Never did he find out that his father hidden his acceptance letter to Hogwarts and any other physical clues regarding the existence of magic, apart from the subconscious feeling that there should be more to the world... It is likely that this feeling later made him become a stage magician.
In 1881, when his father deemed him to be too rebellious with 15, he was sent to a parish (boarding) school, which he promptly ran away from, only to join a traveling circus, where he worked for three years. The only contact with his family during this time were a series of letters in which he lied about his early academic successes.
In 1885, (at the age of 18), Chuck decided that he could be much more successful as an independent performer, parting ways with the circus that had become his family during his time there. Since then, he travels Scotland alone.
In January 1887, he arrived in Hogsmeade in the middle of the night, in search for a well-paying audience for his "magic" shows, unaware of the magical nature of the town and its' inhabitants. Since then, he lied sick in bed with just enough money to pay for the inn's room.
Personality: Chuck is a total opportunist. His interaction with other people is generally steered by "How can I get an advantage?". With a job dependent on being able to impress people, he is also an excellent actor and a good liar. He loves a good story and values improvisation, but hates ignorance in other people. In fact, it is often more important to him that an event sounds interesting than that it is true.
He often tries to hide his true feelings, preferring to act as the overzealous, self-important personality that he created for his performances and pretends he doesn't care about people's opinions. You may have only heard bad things about Chuck, but you have heard of him!
Sample Roleplay Post: Chuck coughed. Ugh, he hated being sick. In retrospect, it would have been wiser of him to buy a thick winter coat than another used tailcoat from that store in the last village he'd passed. He wished he'd at least know the name of the town he'd arrived in two days ago so he could guess in which direction his feet had carried him, but he had been barely able to move around his little room since then. Mentally he went through his budget, trying to calculate at what point of time he would starve if he didn't earn any more money in the meantime. A minute or so later, he gave up. He could barely control his own thoughts at the moment, maybe he should just sleep a little more...
He woke up when someone in the room next to him shouted "Lumos!". There were some weird people here. Chuck had only been here for a day or two, but he was already convinced that at least this inn was some kind of gathering place for weird people who would shout things while they lighted a candle or waved around with sticks as if they were performing a magic trick. The conversations he'd overheard during his arrival last night (or was it the night before? He couldn't remember.) had been very weird as well.
Well, weird people were generally easy to impress, so that was good for him.
