He has a wide array of tailored clothes in his wardrobe, pale blue (Go Arrows!) however is his favourite colour. His hair is a sandy brown/blonde, though his beard comes in a dark black. A scar covers the right of his face, from his eye down to his jaw. He is left handed.
History:
Family History - the St. John's are an exceptionally wealthy pure blood family from the North West of England. For centuries they straddled the Muggle and Wizarding worlds, holding numerous titles from the Muggle King. Though since the Statute of Secrecy the St. John's have strenuously denied any such fraternisation with non-Wizardkind.
1837 - Born in Westmorland, England. The son and heir of Ewart Honorius St. John, there would be no further children. The elder Ewart spent his life in a state of luxury, occasionally funding politicians who would support his concerns, but for the most part just enjoying his immense wealth. It was soon clear that Ewart had Dwarfism, which came as a shock to his parents certainly, but beyond worrying for his sake it changed nothing.
1840 - Ewart's mother dies in a tragic Hippogriff accident, Ewart has only a few hazy memories of his mother.
1843 - Mary Greening marries Ewart senior, becoming a step-mother. They have an excellent relationship, and he calls her Mother after a few years.
1847 - Stephen Valens St. John is born, Ewart loves having a little brother.
1848 - 1855 - At Hogwarts Ewart is sorted into Slytherin, it was largely expected, though his step-mother wondered if he would not be a Ravenclaw like his father. In his first year of school Ewart does moderately well, not really pushing himself. He found it hard to motivate himself, as there were not too many consequences for him if he did poorly in exams. He would still inherit the families houses and wealth. His condescension towards the poorer students got him a few telling offs from the Professors. Obviously Ewart was teased for his height. Jokes here, barbs there. But, honestly, it did not bother the young Wizard. His father had sat him down years ago and told him it would be something that would always follow him round, and that whether it was going to hurt him was upto Ewart. No one could upset him without his permission. Well, there was one time it upset him, in Sixth year he asked a girl out that he had had a crush on for over a year...it ended badly. It was not until third year when Ewart began to apply himself properly. The reason was Alchemy! In the library one evening he had come across a dusty old tome about the subject, and he loved everything about it. Particularly the philosophical elements of the magic. But he soon found out Alchemists tended to have done exceedingly well at school, and to be considered for N.E.W.T. study he would have to have done very well at O.W.L.S.
O.W.L.S
O - Potions, Herbology, Transfiguration, Study of Ancient Runes, Charms, Arithmancy
EE - DADA, Astronomy
During his NEWT years he continued with Potions, Transfiguration, Herbology, Arithmancy and took up Alchemy! He had been reading about the subject for years, and all that preparation paid off. Although difficult Ewart relished the challenge and proved to be an excellent student. He graduated Hogwarts with Os in all of his NEWTS and returned to his father's house in Westmorland to take some time to think. During this time he used his father's wealth to continue his Alchemical studies.
1855 - 1857 For the next few years he spent most of his time at home, working on his own research in Alchemy and spending time with his father. In '54 his brother went to Hogwarts, and was sorted into Hufflepuff. Much to Ewart's disappointment.
1857 - 1862 His father agrees to pay for Ewart to travel to Egypt and study at the Centre for Alchemical Studies there. The five years he spends in the country prove incredibly useful, helping him to truly master his craft. During his time there he published two books, the second is particularly successful, focusing on the philosophical ideas in Alchemy, and brings in a sufficient wage that he no longer has to rely on his father.
1863 - 1877 Ewart had missed his brother's graduation, and the two had fallen largely out of contact in the years Ewart was in Africa. But Ewart made a strong effort to reconnect once he arrived back in England. He applied for a position within the Department of Mysteries, and became an Unspeakable. His research was based around Spagyric, 'plant alchemy.' His brother soon got a position in the Muggle Liaison Office! Ewart was shocked! He had never been a blood supremacist, but it was just obvious to him that Wizardkind was superior to Muggles! He did not want to conqueror the poor creatures, but one surely didn't want to mix with them.
1877 - Purchases a large home in Wellingtonshire
1878 - Stephen marries a young witch named Violet. Violet proves a delightful member of the family, an intelligent and interesting healer. Within a year Archibald Valentinian St. John is born. The birth of the child confirms to Ewart that children are not something he wants to have. An accident at the Department leaves him with a nasty facial scar, naturally he cannot talk about it.
1880 - Ewart, more in an attempt to test his skills than any practical reason, decides to train to become an Animagus. It proves harder than he imagined, and if asked he will lie about how difficult he found it. Two twin daughters are born to Stephen.
1884 Ewart succeeds in transforming into a slightly smaller than average swan, with a similar scar to his on the same cheek. His new ability is promptly registered with the Ministry.
1885 - Ewart's father passes away. Ewart decides to resign his job and return home to the family manor that he has inherited. He works hard to put all the family affairs in order, managing the families business interests and estates. Ewart prefers to spend his time in Wellingtonshire, his father's will forbids him from passing on the house or estate until his natural death, but his brother and his family live in Eden Manor.
December 1886 - A dear Friend tells Ewart that Hogwarts is looking for an Alchemy professor. The castle had always been Ewart's favourite place, yet he had never had a reason to return since graduating. His passion for Alchemy stretched into a passion for sharing his knowledge, and he was a worldleader in the field. He decided to apply for the job, and after an interview with the Headmaster he gained the job. Moving into the castle was an emotional experience, not that he would admit it, and he loved his job from the off.
Personality:
Ewart is a haughty man, who also has a very strict sense of right and wrong. Students should act like students, and professors like professors for example. He is a strict Professor, aware of the gravity and importance of his subject (naturally he believes it to be the most complex of all magic) he does not suffer fools lightly. Ewart enjoys the fact that only the brightest of N.E.W.T.S students can take his class, and he has little time for the younger children's lack of knowledge. But he is very willing to work exceptionally hard to help able students achieve their goals in his class, both in and outside of classroom hours. Ewart is a stoic man, showing emotion with only a a tiny group of people. His circle of friends is small, tending to be men he has known for a few decades, but exceptionally reliable. He is not one for sugar coating things and says what he means regularly. He is a very thick skinned man, from a young age taunts about his height stopped bothering him. He enjoys the finer things in life, wine and clothes especially, and is an avid Appleby Arrows fan.
Sample Roleplay Post:
Ewart stroked his beard as he read an old book about Spagyric. It had been created by an Ancient Greek Wizard, and it had cost an absolute fortune to acquire the book. It had just arrived at Hogwarts this morning, and the student who had told Professor St. John that it had arrived had seen a more emotional reaction out of him than any other student in the last few months. He could not wait till the day was done, and he could delve into the book properly. Outside he heard the shuffling of feet, and the chatter of his students as they arrived for their alchemy lesson. Stepping down from his chair he pointed at the door with his white wand and it opened.
"As usual I expect everyone to enter silently."
His small class entered the room, taking their usual seats. "Quickly now, we don't have all day." Once they had all taken their seats he closed the large wooden door. He did a quick head count to see if everyone was in attendance, unsurprisingly one student was missing again. The first lesson of the day took place at nine, he preferred early classes, students tended to lose their focus as they got nearer to the end of the day. Behind the diminutive Professor was a large chalkboard covering the whole wall, in large white cursive the word SPAGYRIC - LESSON ONE covered it.
Three knocks at the door alerted the class to the arrival of Derrick Alfredsson.
"Mr. Alfredsson, thank you for deciding to grace us with your presence. But, once again, you are late for my class. Which is odd, since the rest of your cohort managed to make it on time. Sit down quickly, twenty points from Slytherin." It pained Ewart to deduct points from his own house, but he would not allow students to get away with unsuitable behaviour for any reason.
