Did you know? Churchgoers and worshippers had to endure a foul stench during prayers due to the amount of bodies often stored within the vaults of churches and chapels.
I must, before all else, apologize for being so absent of late. It seems so cruel that I was to lose both your father and you in one fell swoop, for all that the latter is most assuredly my fault. I would hope to rectify this, to reconnect, to learn all that has happened since we last had occasion to take tea together, and I am saddened that it is tragedy that must serve to re-ignite our bond.
You see dear, it is with sorrow that I must inform you of my father’s passing on Tuesday morning. It was a swift, natural death, but altogether quite sudden. I know he was not truly your grandfather, but he was once a small part of your life, and so I felt it my duty to ensure that you heard this news from me, and not from a third party.
Oh no! That is terrible. I am so sorry for your loss, Honoria. As someone who has lost her father, I know what a terrible pain it is. It is so cruel for you to lose a parent so soon after... Well, you know.
Please, let me know if I can be of help in any way. I will come visit you at once if you need someone to be with. You are still family to me, after all and I could not possibly leave you alone at this time of need.

Enclosed is a bouquet of marigolds (grief), fennel flowers (strength) and mullein leaves/flowers (take courage). Also a box of chocolates.
You are a sweet, thoughtful, and wonderful girl. I hardly feel right in asking you for anything, but I do ask that you make yourself available to your sister. Katherine is so wonderfully delicate, and I worry most ardently about how she is taking this tragic news.
You know that I would never turn down an opportunity to spend time with my sister, even under normal circumstances. I can, perhaps, take her to London for an afternoon? I will, of course, be available to spend time with her any day you might need her.
I think that that would be very kind indeed! I am sure that if you wrote to her, she would be eager indeed to go. I am not yet certain if she intends to attend the funeral on Thursday, but if her studies will not suffer for it, I should happily sign her out of school regardless for a long week-end.
