Transfiguration [NEWT Years 6-7] Lesson 1

“As you know,” he began to his class with his back turned, “this is one of the most complex and most dangerous classes to be taught within the walls of Hogwarts. As we progress for this point in the term forward, anyone acting inappropriately or anyone who is falling behind will be dismissed from the course. Consider this your one and only warning.”

The classroom which normally had a roaring fire and ten blazing torches was dimly lit today and only the remnant of embers remained burning in the fireplace. Even the characters forged into the stained glassed windows transformed their expressions of joy into a stern visage. The desk too had been replaced by full length mirrors, one for each student.

“As you know by this point from our previous lectures, human transfiguration is extremely difficult and if done improperly can lead to disastrous results," he turned to the class, “which is why you will be experimenting on yourself and yourself alone.”

Harrison waved his wand at a curtain which hung across the front of the room causing it to fall to the floor and expose a large mirror which he stood in front of.

“Visualization and intention,” he repeated to the class, “this is your mantra, and more than any other time right now, your concentration and power of will shall be the most important.”

He narrowed his eyes and stared deep into his own reflection. Almost in a whisper he said,

“CRINUS MUTO.”

After a singular moment, he took a deep breath and turned back to the class. His once dark blonde eyebrows were now a comically bright shade of fir engine red. He smiled broadly at his students,

“See, works like a charm! Now each of you gaze into the mirror and think of a new color for our eyebrows. Close your eyes and visualize it. Make the color bright. Any color you wish, just make sure you see it clear as day. Then, when you are ready recite the incantation. I’ll be walking around assisting as necessary. Speak out if you have questions.”

He began to walk the room “Remember participation gets you house points and the first person to define MUTO from the nation will receive 10 additional house points. Begin.”

Eoin listened as the professor spoke, not finding him very endearing. A color change charm? Eoin turned towards Hector and smiled. They had practiced this on their own during one of their study sessions, finding teenage amusement in turning one anothers hair various shades. Thus when he looked into the mirror and cast the spell, his eyebrows easily turned a neon yellow.

Owain looked at his own reflection and wondered which color he should turn his eyebrows. Deciding on a shade of green, he attempted the spell. It took a couple of tries but soon his eyebrows were very much akin to a caterpillar though less thick.
