Elsbeth settled down considerably when Lyra dropped her wand. AT least tessa had agreed with elsbeth on that, despit her trying to recuirt lyra to being a prosittute. elsbeth did not think august would liek that very much so she decided not to encourage it.

upon being called out, she immediately moeed to poor lyra a drink. she stumbled a moment and her ahand slipped on the glass before finally bein ablr to grasp it. She slid the full glass of pure vodka toward the younger girl, "here. writing about what?"

Lyra glared at the other woman a moent before she took the shot Miss Gilsaa had pured for her, enjoying the sweet-burn feel on her throat. This was defintiely much better than any of the other things she had tried; smoother and sweeter and cleaner than firewhiskey or any of those vulgar drinks. Vodka spoke of refinement; though nothing about their present circumstances did.

"I only wrote to him," she muttered confidentially, "Because he broke my betrothal. My brothers betrothed me to some old professor, you know, and August went through the trouble of breaking that whole thing off, even after I told him we ought not to speak to each other ever again. Which was sort of sweet of him, you know. But I thought that he might have ultrior motives, so I wrote him to find out," she said, her speech really beginning to slur quite a bit.

"Fine, only 'cause it'll shutup your whore mouth," Elsbeth said to Tess anad offered her the alcohol that she had requested. Maybe she'd rink too much and die in her sleep.

"Old professors," She returned to Lyra, nodding wisely, "You'd be happy that he got you out of that. I know far too much about old profesors." Being a prostitute would do that to you. If only Lyra knew. "Of cousre he has ulterior motive syou stupid silly girl!" She exclaimed, exapserated. Was Elsbeth erally the only person who knew the obvious? They needed to be together and they needed to be together now. Being smarter than everyone else was such a curse.

Lra huffed at being called stupi and silly by a squib, of all things. "I wrote to determine his motives," she declared aloofly, "But they change nothing. After the events of December, I shall never be able to forgive him."

"In fact," Lyra continued, her tone lowering conspiratorially, "I have already been moving on, you know. I have been chatting with all sorts of young, eligible gentlemen since my engagment was broken," she said. It might have been a bit of an exaggeration; and by a bit, she meant maybe a lot, but Elsbeth, and more importantly, August, didn't need to nkow that.

"No!" She exclaimed too loudly, "There is no other elegible gentlamn more eligable than August!" She should be engaged to him! Elsbeth wanted to grab her shoulders and shake her until she got the point in her head, but she did nto feel as if that would work well. She slid off of her stool and settled herself on the floor, half way underneath a table, "He loves you! You jmust be with him! He will positively die wihtou you!" Possibly becuase Elsbeth might have something to do with that, but not really.

Hearing the words aloud--he loves you--did funny things to her insides. Even though she would never confide in Elsbetha Gisella under normal circumstances, or even talk to her under normal circumstances, it suddenly felt like the most natural thing in the world to blurt out, "I feel that way, too. That's why I tried to find him tonight. I love him, and he's such an awful idiot that he doesn't know it," she said bitterly, clutching the vodka bottle as she took another sip. "I was supposed to marry him, until it all went wrong," she said, shaking her head and resting her arms against the countertop.

"He is an awful idiot," Elsbeth agreed, hugging her knees to her chest and resting her chin on them, "I sent all those gifts to you and he still messed it up! What an idiot." She was rather disappointed in him for that. She'd done all that, worked around her very bieng in Irvingly and having to write different shop owners and organized things and hire a delivery boy - she'd worked hard and he had completely wasted it.

"Nothing is wrong," She whispered almost despareately, "You can still marry him."

Lyra shook her head, suddenly feeling sleepy. "No, no," she mumbled in response to Elsbeth's last sentence. "I can't marry him unless he does something, you know. I promised myself, after last time. He has to court me and propose and everything. And you know he never will, he's August, you know. He doesn't do those sorts of things," she mumbled, her head sinking into the comfort of her arms, against the table top. She blinked slowly.

"He's just too daft to ask, you know," she mumbled, drifting off.

Elsbeth needed to discuss things with August. HE was terribly slipping things up and she was not hapy about it. She decided that Lyra was a decent woman and she could deal with her as a sister in law. "He will," She promised lazily as she leaned backwards and looked up at the bottom of the table. It was more comfortable than it looked.

She curled onto her side and used her arm as a pillow. The last thing she mumbled as she dozed off was, "Your brothers are idiots." And then she was out for the night.
