Dearest Topaz,

I hope that this letter finds you well but, more importantly, I hope that it finds you somewhere comfortable and private, for I fear I have terrible news that I must relay.

Your mother, in a most untimely and unfortunate fashion, has passed away. It was an adder’s bite that took her, yesterday, in the garden. By the time she was found, it was already too late to do anything for her. I myself was at the Ministry and had to receive the letter by owl, though I rushed home at once to see for myself.

I will come to Hogwarts on Halloween to collect you. I am so sorry that I cannot write with gladder tidings.
