    Ruby,
I got a letter today from someone who didn't sign their name.

You have to promise not to tell Papa. I haven't told him because I think he'll be angry--not with me, I don't think, because it's not as though I did anything to make this person write to me, but I think he'll be angry about the letter and I don't know what he'll do and I don't know if I want him to.

I think the person who wrote it is a werewolf. They sent me... something for the bleeding tonight. And they tried to give me advice about it. I don't think someone could have written that if they weren't--I mean if they hadn't gone through it.

What should I do? Should I write back? I can't tell Papa. I know it isn't one of the other werewolves who comes in to the Ministry and I don't know whether he'd want to take the letter to the Werewolf Capture Unit and--I don't know. I think they were trying to do something nice for me and I don't want to repay them by sending the Ministry after them.

I don't know why they wrote to me. Do you think they want me to write back? If they really have been through all of this I might want to ask them questions, but I don't know whether they would answer. And what if it isn't a werewolf and this is some kind of hoax? I don't know what to do at all!

Promise you won't tell Papa! Or Delight or Bash, either. Don't tell anyone, Ruby, please, just tell me what you think I should do!

    My dearest Topaz,

It sounds like you're more convinced that it isn't a joke. Or rather, that there is a merit of truth in it. I imagine that there's things about being a werewolf that only you werewolves can truly understand. Like us girls and our monthly curse!

Maybe they truly do mean well. Maybe they're from some kind of secret werewolf society meant to help its members cope with being werewolves?

I'd write back but not sign the letter and maybe even change my handwriting so if it is is a joke and they plan to publish it somewhere it'll be useless for them. OH! Or you can charm your letter so it destroys itself once they read it once. A friend of mine taught me how to do it. Her sister was using it all the time when she was exchanging letters with her now husband. The incantation is [Magical Latin].

    Love,
    Ruby

PS: I forgot to add it in my letter, but of course I won't tell Papa or Bash or Delight!
As if I need to be told about Bash especially!

    Ruby,
I did what you said and I think the charm worked the way it was supposed to! And they wrote me back! Now you really mustn't tell Papa because I can't imagine what he would think if he knew that I was writing letters to a werewolf!

Well I suppose everyone we know is writing letters to a werewolf now but you know what I meant

I'm going to try and see whether they know any of the things I can't find in books. I think Papa would approve of that even if he might not think my methods are the most ideal. Don't tell anyone!

    Love,
    Topaz

    My dearest Topaz,

I'm happy to hear that! Still, be careful, alright? Promise me not to try and meet with him if he tries to suggest it.

I promise not to tell anyone.

    Love,
    Ruby

    Ruby,
Meet with him? He won't even tell me his name, so I hardly think he'd going to start arranging tea parties! I don't even know if it is a him. The handwriting is very neat and I'm used to boys' handwriting being messier.

Whoever they are it seems like they don't have very many answers. This is so frustrating. Someone has to know about this. It's not as though I'm the very first person to ever have been attacked. Why aren't there more answers?

I'm going to find answers. And if no one has written them out in books yet then I'm going to find them myself.

    My dearest Topaz,

I suppose I was afraid that if you exchanged too many letters you might start liking this mysterious person and end up trusting them more than you should. They're still a werewolf, you know. Many of them don't aren't as pure hearted as you, Topaz.

Promise me not to do something stupid in search of those answers. Try not to hurt yourself in doing so. Or worse, end up hurting someone else in the process! Maybe these are the sort of questions that don't have any answers. Like, I don't know. Whether there's people living in space, or whether God actually exists.

    Love,
    Ruby

    Ruby,
Every question has an answer, if you're brave enough to look for it.

Don't worry about me, Ruby. I can look out for myself and I won't do anything stupid.

    Ruby,
I did something today which you can't tell Papa about. I suppose I should have asked you first to make sure it wasn't a silly thing to do but I've just gotten so frustrated with how no one knows the answers to any of my questions and no one seems to care enough to even be asking the questions, much less trying to figure out the answers. Right after it happened I thought I would have preferred if no one talked about it and I hated every time it was brought up in the Prophet, but now I wish more people were talking about lycanthropy and what to do about it, because at least that would mean we were making some sort of progress! Looking back on it, I don't think anyone ever cared about me or about werewolves one way or another, I think they were just looking for excuses to say mean things about Papa--honestly no matter what happened they probably would have reacted the same way!

Anyway, no one knows anything about this and I can't figure everything out myself. I need someone to get elected who thinks it's important to figure out why so many werewolf attacks happen, and how to stop them in the future, but no one is even talking about it. A bunch of Muggles died in Glasgow, and they still aren't talking about it! Mr. Flint is even in charge of the Werewolf Capture Unit, so he must have opinions on it. I don't understand why no one will admit that it's a problem that needs to be solved!

So I wrote Mr. Flint a letter. An anonymous one, because I don't want to get the family involved in anything else after this summer, but I didn't think that he'd bother to respond to a letter that wasn't signed properly (not that I think he'd be much more likely to respond to one from me), so I sent a copy to the Prophet, too. If they won't talk about it, I'll talk about it!

I'm worried that Papa might see it in the Prophet and know that it's me and be cross (if the Prophet even prints it, which they might not--I don't know whether they filter letters and things) but even though I'm worried I'm sort of... I don't know. Proud isn't the right word. I'll be proud if it works and people actually start coming out with policies, but I don't know whether they will or not. I just don't want to feel as though no one cares about this... about me. This is my whole life, now, because the life I should've had is gone, and if they don't care about werewolves and they don't care about making my life any better the very least they can do is try and keep it from happening to other people.

If you see it in the Daily Prophet, tell me what you think.

    Love,
    Topaz

    Dear Topaz,

Oh dear, people died in Glasgow? I should really start paying more attention to the Prophet, because this is the first time I hear of it. I suppose this proves your point that nobody is doing anything about your problem.

Of course I won't tell Papa anything. I'm really proud of you for being so brave and writing to the Prophet and Mr. Flint. I don't know who that is, but he sounds like an unpleasant old man. Wasn't that salty old lady Minister a Flint? The one that thinks that muggles are out to get us.

I'm sure that Papa will be proud of you if he finds out you wrote that letter. He would have done something about these problems himself if they had let him to. It's a great letter. He'll have to do something about it, too, if he wants to be elected. Most people may not care about werewolves, but they do care about not turning into one.

    Love,
    Ruby

    Ruby,
Did you see the newspaper today? Mr. Ross (you remember him, he's one of Papa's friends) responded to my letter--well, it wasn't really directly a response but he did talk about it during the interview they printed, and it was so wonderful.

Ruby, I think it worked! I think people are going to talk about this now and they're going to make progress on it and Mr. Ross wants to do research and find a cure!

    Dear Topaz,

I read the newspaper! And I do remember who Mr. Ross is. I'm not that clueless!

That's wonderful! He sounds like he'll make a great Minister. Someone Papa would have liked. I hope that won't mean he won't He sounds like he wants the best for everyone.

I really hope that they'll bring the changes you want and find a cure!

    Love,
    Ruby
