At an outrageously tall height of five feet and ten inches, Opal doesn’t have terribly much in the way of curves - most coming from the time of her life when she was forced to tight lace a corset that she rarely wears at present - and has always had a naturally slender form, body looking slight and willowy in both shape and the way she naturally carries herself. Her hair is an unremarkable shade of dirty blonde, eyes greyish-blue and perhaps the most noticeable thing about her (save for her height!) is that her dark eyebrows are prominent and have always missed the coordination notice with her hair as they are a dark color. In terms of fashion, Opal can be a bit inconsistent. On her more feminist days she will outright refuse to dress in fashions expected of women and instead parade around (making quite a show of it) in mens clothes. Other days a simple dress is nice to her and then there are days when she’ll wear traditional wizard robes. She also favors bloomer suits, liking the balance between “feminine” structure and “masculine” freedom. She is ambidextrous - naturally she gravitated to her left hand but her parents attempted to train that out of her. As such, free from her family she favors her left hand though it is not uncommon for her to switch between the two during tasks.History:
1861 | Opaline is born in the last that Lydia and Oliver trask will have. In keeping with the trend of gemstone inspired names, she is called Opaline. She is a fussier child than the parents are used to but regardless she is given everything the stable middle class family can afford to provide.Personality:
1865 - 68 | As she grows older, she is tutored by her mother in arithmetic, music and other such things that a young lady of her station should know. They are a respected family in their town of Highbridge, Somerset in England and as such she will certainly certainly be taught all the things her sisters were taught as to secure a good husband. She rebels against it, even at a young age, as she does not have interest in music or dancing. Her parents think their child simply energetic and force the issue within their parental rights.
1868 | She is seven years old when it becomes obvious that Opal is not, in fact, just a spirited young girl who weird things just seem to happen around. Irrefutable proof of her magic comes one day when she is playing and her parents worry of what to do with her. Needless to say, her freedoms are severely limited for fear of her being found out and taken away for being whatever she is. Opal is hardly fazed by it all, finding it to be amazing that she can do what she has done - magic is all she can use to describe it - and she continues to be the sprightly young girl she was before, rebelling ever further against her parents.
1870 | At nine years old the family are more than a bit used to her being rebellious and having tantrums when they do something she thinks is wrong in any fashion. They think it is just childishness at play and that as she grows she will grow out of it.
1872 | After years of worrying what was wrong with their child, they are visited by a mysterious man who explains that Opal is a witch. The family is utterly terrified by this and more than a little bit apprehensive about sending her to a school called Hogwarts. However they decide it best that she learn how to control said magic so that she may live a normal life when it is time for her to wed. She is sent to Hogwarts in september and sorted into Gryffindor. Her parents, meanwhile, make up excuses of her going to stay with family often for some reason or another to explain away her absence as they can not imagine the shame of anyone finding out that their child is a witch.
Hogwarts Years (1872 - 1879) | She really comes into herself during her years at Hogwarts. Each break and return home worry her family further as she has become more pugnacious and outspoken than they could ever imagine. They are certain, however, that upon her finishing they can straighten her out. At Hogwarts she has a close enough group of friends but is far too busy reading everything she can about the magical creatures and theory that she can get her hands on. Enthusiasm aids to ensure that she takes easily to magic and is in fact a rather talented witch. But the more she reads, the less complacent she becomes in her life. The slavery of House Elves, for one, is something she is rather upset about. As well as the wizard relationship with werewolves and vampires. Don’t even get her started on the same staunch rules that muggles (she has learned that non-magical folk are called such) have!
It is not unusual during these years for Opal to get in arguments and even throw fists at boys - or girls! - who speak out against her causes. Though her activism is not more than child's play at this point, she does have great designs to be a progressive sort that protests the authorities when needed and displays the troubles of those she protests for with theatrical and metaphorical displays. The first one comes when she refuses to speak for a solid week after a child in her town whom she knew is sent to work hard labor. This was to symbolize the lack of voice such underprivileged children have.
She becomes more progressive the more her mind grows and by the time her seventh year arrives her parents are certain that drastic action must be taken. She is betrothed unknowingly to a friend of her parents who has had no children in his two marriages, despite his age. When she leaves Hogwarts with great scores she is forced into this marriage and her wand is taken to say. Needless to say, Opal has protested the marriage and even put a show of it on her wedding night, refusing to speak to or look at the man - much less allow him to consummate their marriage.
At the end of the year, after her marriage is solidified and her wand taken, she gets more into the scene so to speak of similarly minded people. It is in a protest of sorts that she is first arrested, much to the displeasure of her family. This is something that serves to alienate herself and her husband from those of more “acceptable” standing though it hardly matters - her husband will not live long enough to see the extensive alienation. Luckily for her, having had no children prior and his will ensuring her care, she still has money to maintain an upper-middle class lifestyle.
1880 | Not having donned mourning - something that further ostracizes her from “polite” company, she becomes more into the women’s suffrage movement as she’s always vaguely been. Opal commits to attending meetings with a group of suffragists and this opens up further the world of activism to her. She’d always been the point to make displays of her protests before the moment but she felt as though she’d truly found her place with a group of similarly minded women. It isn’t long before she expands her horizons, adding to it more run ins with authority and what not. It is also this year that she buys herself a new wand.
1880 - 1884 | Continuing on with her displays of protests for multiple causes, she immerses herself even further into the world of activism both for the muggle and magical world. She takes interest in law and does everything she can to study up on such things, eventually forming a quite broad knowledge on laws that she mostly uses to fight back against unlawful arresting. She is, however, still known to be incarcerated for disturbance but is never fully charged with anything worse because at most her behavior is simply that: a disturbance. This serves to further sully her image, but she doesn’t much care.
It is sometime in this area as well (1882 or 1883) that she hears through the grapevine in her more magical circles about a meeting for activists of the magical persuasion. She attends, of course, and quickly finds arguably the closest friends she’s ever had amongst those same people.
