Appearance:

Standing at a modest 5’, Zinnia is a little on the plump side. She has brown eyes and curly gray hair. She dresses modestly and in muted colors appropriate for a woman of her age and station. Her hands have light callouses from many years of wielding a needle. Zinnia is ambidextrous, but strictly uses her right hand (as is proper!) in public and in front of her charges.

History:

1780 — Zinnia Grace Humphrey is the fifth child born to Felix and Constance Humphrey.

1781 — Mark goes to Hogwarts.

1784 — Zinnia gains a younger sister, Coral; in the same year, Oliver begins attending Hogwarts.

1786 — Joy graduates and debuts. She has a whirlwind romance and marries by the end of the year.

1788 — Mark graduates and Pearl goes to Hogwarts.

1791 — Oliver graduates. It is finally Zinnia’s turn to begin her education, and she is sorted into Hufflepuff.

1795 — Pearl graduates. Zinnia is chosen as Prefect, and Coral joins her at Hogwarts.

1797 — Zinna becomes Head Girl.

1798 — The June after Zinnia’s graduation, Pearl weds. At the reception, Zinnia meets a fellow Hufflepuff alumnus, Mr. Godfrey Basil Abbott, a healer at St. Mungo’s.

1799 — In the first half of the year Pearl dies in childbirth. Zinnia’s planned summer wedding is postponed.

1800 — On the first day of the new century, Zinnia and Godfrey wed.

1801 — After an uneventful pregnancy, Zinnia gives Godfrey a daughter on the Vernal Equinox. They name her Verity Rose.

1802 — Coral graduates.

1805 — Coral weds.

1807 — Zinnia finally has a second daughter, Amity Magnolia.

1812 — Godfrey and Zinnia’s third and final child is a boy, Diligence Rowan. Verity goes to Hogwarts.

1818 — Amity begins her education.

1819 — Verity graduates.

1821 — To Zinnia’s delight, her eldest daughter secures a very practical match.

1823 — Diligence goes off to Hogwarts and is sorted into Hufflepuff.

1825 — Amity graduates and immediately becomes attached to a boy that Zinnia finds less than ideal.

1826 — Despite Zinnia’s misgivings, Amity weds her beau and the two begin a life together. While things are financially rocky, they are obviously very much in love and work together to make ends meet.

1830 — Diligence graduates and follows his father in taking an internship at St. Mungo’s.

1836 — In December, Diligence marries Miss Charlotte Cecilia Hornby.

1838 — Diligence and Lotte have their first child, a girl named Josephine.

1841 — Lotte gives Diligence a son named Solomon.

1845 — Charlotte produces another daughter, Hannah.

1847 — Georgia is the last child to be born to Diligence.

1852 — When Solomon begins his Hogwarts education, he is sorted into Hufflepuff.

1855 — Godfrey catches a summer cold and dies on July 10 — the very day that had been originally set for his marriage to Zinnia. After fifty-five years of marriage, Zinnia is at a loss as to what to do with herself.

1857 — Shortly after the end of her mourning period, Zinnia takes a job as a nanny to six-month-old Colum McKinnon.

1859 — Solomon graduates and follows the same career path as his father and grandfather.

1862 — The McKinnons have a second child, a girl named Iona.

1865 — Despite everything that both Zinnia and a healer can do, poor little Iona is lost to a fever.

1866 — Solomon marries ninteen-year-old Viola Victoria Bytheway, a pretty blonde muggleborn. Despite her large family, she has trouble conceiving a child.

1867 — Greer gives birth to a set of twins, Ùna and Kenna, on the 29th and 30th of November.

1868 — Colum goes off to Hogwarts and is sorted into Slytherin.

1870 — Both Greer and Viola give birth — Greer to a boy named Iain, and Viola to twins Basil and Rowena — and in a cruel twist of fate both mothers are lost in the process. As attached as she has become to her employers and charges, Zinnia feels both loses keenly.

1874 — Adventurous little Kenna transforms a sewing needle into a rapier; Zinnia is thoroughly unamused but secretly quite proud of the impressive display of magic.

1876 — Colum decides on a career as an Obliviator.

1877 — In the middle of the night Dougal, Zinnia, and Colum are forced to bundle the children out of the house and onto the Knight Bus because Dougal’s brother-in-law has led a mob to burn the house. The little ones are told that they are going on an adventure, and they spend a month at the Three Broomsticks before Dougal is able to secure them a house in Hogsmeade.

1879 — When Colum reveals the real reason for the family’s move, Zinnia is sorely tempted to box his ears. The twins go to Hogwarts where Kenna is sorted into Gryffindor and Ùna into Hufflepuff.

1881 — Iain, along with Zinnia’s twin great-grandchildren, goes to Hogwarts. Iain is sorted into Gryffindor, Basil into Hufflepuff, and Rowena (amusingly) into Ravenclaw. With all the children in Hogwarts, Dougal takes up his cousin on an offer of more lucrative employment in America. Zinnia’s responsibilities have been growing over the years, and with Dougal’s absence she is left the last details of the running of the household.

1884 — Ironically, Zinnia’s sister Joy is lost to the Laughing Plague.

Personality:

Particular, nosy, strong-willed, nurturing, fiercely protective, sensible. Basically Mary Poppins + Mrs. Potts + Minerva McGonagall. Honey Badger Don’t Care.

"Mercy, child, you near lept out of your skin!" Zinnia had been enjoying the day in the park -- although she was rather wistful about the fact that the McKinnon children were all at Hogwarts and so she did not have any children to bring to the park with her, she hoped Colum would wed and begin having children soon -- when she had accidentally startled the poor girl. "You look like you need a spot of tea."

Tea, that was the best thing for frayed nerves. A nice chamomile, perhaps, or even a cup of earl grey. Over the years Zinnia had developed quite the palate when it came to tea (well, especially tea). "Are you quite all right? You look absolutely rattled!"
