    Charles Whyte

    In Character
    Full Name: Charles Humphrey Whyte
Nicknames: Unless on business, he goes primarily by Charlie.
    Birthdate: Friday 22 May 1863
    Current Age: Twenty two
    Occupation: Heir to Whyte Enterprises
    Reputation: 4
Residence: While he usually stays in Rhode Island, for the duration of the business deal he is residing in London.
Hogwarts House: Unknown as he was educated in America. However, if he had attended Hogwarts, he probably would have been sorted into Slytherin.
Wand: Fir and phoenix feather, 14 inches and quite bendy.
    Blood Status: Pureblood
    Social Class: Upper
    Family:
    Richard Whyte, Father [18--]
Father inherited his business from my grandfather, quickly growing it to have two businesses in America. Now he’s attempting to expand to Europe and, of course, as heir I’m dragged along on the trips too. He almost treats us as if we are simply pawns in his plans and I doubt if he thinks of us as more than ways to expand his business. Especially my sisters. Father is constantly devising some scheme to marry one of the girls off to some potential business partner or other. Of course, Mother wouldn’t allow precious Lana to be married off to anyone who isn’t the epitome of high society, so his intentions fall much more heavily on Roberta. Father is nothing if not shrewd, and I dare say that I haven’t inherited this trait.
Alena Whyte née Vablatsky, Mother [18--]
Mother is nothing if not a woman who some describe to be as stubborn as a mule. With her beauty that comes from her Russian heritage comes a sharp tongue and a lot more intelligence than people credit her for. A true woman of society, I doubt that father understood that there was more to her than simple decadence when he proposed. Father also appears to have a lack of fondness of her, which isn’t entirely uncommon, I suppose.
    Roberta Whyte, Sister [1860]
Approaching the age of a spinster doesn’t suit Roberta in my opinion. For some bizarre reason, she appears to think that she has a duty of care to make sure that I am not partaking in any activities I shouldn’t be. Is this what happens to all women who remain unmarried for such a period of time? It’s not entirely her fault that her marital status is what it is, but she certainly hasn’t helped matters. Within a year of her debut, she already had five proposals. Had she accepted one of them, she needn’t be worried about what the future would hold now. She would be married, and probably have children by now. However, there were a few proposals that Mother rejected on Roberta’s behalf, and she definitely hasn’t had any since Father pretty much announced to the world that she would be marrying the Spanish delegate. That certainly didn’t work out. Although she prefers Aggie, I usually insist upon calling her by her real name.
    Lana Whyte, Sister [1872]
Out of the three of us, Lana is the one who most favours Mother in both looks and personality. Obviously she’s Mother’s favourite. They seem to spend all of the time that they have together discussing fashion and society balls- such boring things. If all women were like that, I would class them as utterly horrible creatures and I would avoid them. Luckily the women I find my company in are much more amiable than any of those in my family.
    Appearance:
Favouring Father in appearance has worked out much better for me than it has for Roberta. While my sister is cursed by our mother for not being tall enough, not being pretty enough, not being enough of anything really, Father’s looks make me seem as handsome as he was in his younger years, if I may say so myself. I have inherited his stature, standing at just over five foot seven and also his hair colour, which was once a rich honey blonde. In fact, I think that the only thing that I have inherited from my maternal side was my blue-grey eyes.

I dress in what is appropriate for a man of my station, out of necessity rather than anything else. While my clothes aren’t anything that are straight out of the major fashion houses, they are attractive and comfortable, and I’m rather pleased with them.
    History:
Like my sister before me, I was born in the house in which I have always lived- much to my chagrin. The Gables, despite being comfortable and rather lavish, is unfortunate in the fact that it forces me to see my family each and every day. I suppose that establishing a business in Europe would be beneficial in that way- as the overseer, I would have to find myself staying in Europe, and would have to find myself my own accommodation in whatever country I found myself in, thus freeing myself from the tether of having my entire family in my home.

In my opinion, the house itself is rather gaudy. It is one thing to have a lavish home, and another to build a house that attempts to blend too many elements and ends up turning into a disastrous mess. Despite seeming to fit in with the other houses around it, I cannot help but remark upon its appearance with distaste and I am glad for the opportunity to remove myself from it.

The interiors of our less-than-humble abode are in just as poor taste as the exteriors. Mother and Father never seem to be able to decide upon exactly what colour it should be painted, resulting in ever-changing walls holding tones that never seem to really complement the house they are in. The pair never seem to possess whatever refinement they try to force us to have, and I am rather glad that I hardly pay heed if that mismatched house is what they call one of good taste. While my tastes can sometimes be questionable, I would say that I would never even dare to create a house like that.

My birth was a rather uneventful one. I may be incorrect but my understanding is that Father was at work on that fateful Friday and was unaware that his wife had given birth until he returned home later that day. However, as I say, this is only from information I have gathered in snippets and I may be entirely wrong. I was born healthy and there were little to no problems with the birth, unlike with Roberta. In fact, almost every aspect of my birth contrasts to that of my elder sister. There was no debate, no duel, over my name, and most importantly, I was born a boy. After three years with only a girl, my parents had a son. A member of the family to carry on the name and the business. Even if I didn’t know it then, the weight on my tiny shoulders was immense.

I performed my first act of magic when I was only a little over two years old- cementing my place as favourite child. Or, at least, I was then. In hindsight, it was almost as if magic blessed me so young simply to spite my elder sister- she was almost five and still hadn’t shown any signs of possessing the wizarding ability. I would particularly say this as my first act of magic was to my sister’s misfortune- in a fit of rage, I broke her favourite doll. Of course, my parents were delighted and the actual event of breaking the doll was glossed over- it was much more important that their son had proven himself to be a wizard than their daughter losing one doll when she already had plenty, after all.

Growing up, I suppose that I was rather spoiled. In my young naive mind, I would always be the apple of my parents’ eyes- why wouldn’t I be? I was their son and heir, and there seemed to be no signs of another child. Occasionally, I let being the favourite go to my head and I performed a whole variety of actions that I am positive that I wouldn’t have gotten away with otherwise. Usually, Roberta suffered the most from my actions as it was usually she who I would mock and her things that I would “experiment” on. I would not blame my sister for thinking less of me after that.

However, my position of favourite was jeopardized when I turned nine. Roberta had gone away to school, and I was left alone with my parents, and the odd member of household staff. Soon, though, I learned that we wouldn’t be alone for long. After nine years, Mother was pregnant once more. I was relieved (or as relieved as a nine year old could be) when I discovered that the child was a girl. I was still the only son and heir, and was content with that. However, as Lana grew older and more beautiful, I soon realised that it was her, and not me, who Mother’s attentions had shifted to. Father hadn’t really revealed who was his favourite, but I am confident that as his only son, I would be the occupier of that position.

With the September of 1874 came my first delve into magical education. Having been used to having a certain level of comfort while at home, I was quite shocked to discover how much I actually had to do at the school. However, Father had told me quite certainly that I was to knuckle down and do well if I wanted to inherit the building, so as much I disliked it, that was what I had to do.

Roberta’s coming out ball was one of the next big events that happened to me. Not having really attended many balls before, I was excited to see how it all worked and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I had one of my sister’s first dances and Father had the other, and it was all rather exciting if I may say so myself.

I graduated from school just scraping the grades that I needed to have the “business acumen” that Father required from an heir. Not that you really need too many grades to run a business, though. Like expected, I was quickly drafted in to work for Father’s company. The year of my graduation also saw me rack up my first real gambling debt. One of my new colleagues was hosting a card game and, of course, I joined in. By the end of it, I owed a total of 11 galleons, which I did eventually manage to pay back without my father learning of the incident. Over the years, I started to owe more and more money to more and more people. Some would say that my actions were irresponsible (this ‘some’ being primarily Roberta), but after more than a few drinks, I can’t usually help myself. However, I’ve managed to keep my reckless behaviour from Father, but sadly not from Roberta.

In the winter of my twentieth year, we spent the winter away from Rhode Island in the first time in my memory. Roberta had declined her eleventh suitor, and it was becoming rather obvious by this point that we may not have been able to secure any suitor for her. I suspect that she may have been in love with one of the previous suitors, but I never really paid much attention to them so I cannot be sure. However, it was slightly worrying that my sister was becoming a spinster.

In 1884, Father announced to the world that we would be expanding to Spain. Of course, I was delighted by this as I would be the overseer of the business over there and Spain was notorious for having good wine and pretty women. I was very much content. However, the deal fell through and I was once more resigned to spending time with my family in Rhode Island.
