July 20th
Nate hesitated outside the privacy curtains that surrounded the patient bed he’d been directed to. They were drawn mostly shut but with a gap enough to suggest privacy was not imperative but highly valued. As if guests were not barred but not highly welcomed either. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He couldn’t hear anyone inside… Maybe he was sleeping.
He thought about leaving but even the idea of it killed him. He hadn’t really had a chance to talk to August since London but it had been a few days now and he couldn’t stand it anymore. With a breath he stepped into view of gap so there was no going back.
Nate knew there was something wrong with his memory, he’d known it from their first interaction. He also knew August was uncomfortable with guests just yet but part of him couldn’t believe the ragged, starved, confused man he’d brought back from London was really his old friend. Part of him couldn't believe he’d ever accepted August was dead. And part of him still couldn’t believe, after two years, he was seeing his friend alive again.
He cleared his throat awkwardly. “Hope I’m not intruding…” Being so formal with even a shell of August felt strange but Nate was a stranger for all August remembered.
