Appearance: Effie is 5’6” with a petite but sturdy frame. She used to be quite energetic, going for nature walks with her family. She also enjoyed swimming. However, since moving to Hogsmeade, she’s been loosing weight and muscle (something her mother would say is for the best). She has stunning green eyes she inherited from her father. Her skin is a little dark, from her mother, a dark Scott. She has a small face with a petite nose, and a small mouth that smiles easily. Her hair is dark, thick, and kept up in a simple fashion. Growing up, her mother told her not to smile so much, as her canines are quite sharp and – in her mother’s words – “wolfish and unlady-like. However, her father made sure she smiled as much and as often as possible.
Given the recent “developments” in her family, Effie’s appearance has been called into question, some people saying that she looks a bit Chinese. The rumours are aimed at her mother, who has since gone on to divorce her father and marry another man.
Effie used to wear elaborate dresses with traditional Chinese flare added. However, since moving out of her mother’s home she wears very simple dresses, often in dark colours. She still has a few expensive gowns locked away in her steamer trunk, but she has no occasion to wear them. She’s considering selling them.
She’s left handed, though ambidextrous with her wand.
History:
Finnigan Blackwood moved to British occupied Hong Kong in 1852, sent by the ministry in London to assist with the establishment of a magical community in the colony. The expansion of the British empire was causing problems to arise in the wizard community as well as the muggle one. He brought his young wife with him, against her wishes. Eustice wished to stay in London, or at least, remain with her family in Scotland.
Once the ministry was settled, Finnigan was given the job as head of the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, out of necessity a much bigger department in Hong Kong than in London. He moved his wife into a manor in Victoria Peak. To please his wife, he brought along Eustice’s mother, Anne, so she wouldn’t feel so alone. But Hong Kong wasn’t at all like Eustice thought, and she soon adapted. Making friends with muggles and other ministry worker’s wives that lived on the posh mountain overlooking the city. At her husbands insistance, she even began to make friends with some Chinese women, though they did not live in the same area. These women were usually the wives and daughters of Finnigan’s friends at the ministry. Some British men married Chinese women as well, though this was a little scandalous. Eustice was drawn to their beautiful clothes and culture, so very different from her own. They, in turn, learned English from her, despite her strong Scottish brogue. Finnigan often teased that he could spot his wives’ friends once they opened their mouths and a strange mix of accents spewed out.
Eustice and her husband were close, but things were very different when it came to their love life. Finnigan often appeared distracted, and closed-off. The two slept in separate bedrooms – which wasn’t all that uncommon – and rarely spent much time together. Despite this, nobody doubted that the two were happy.
Anne, however, hated Hong Kong. Even though they had many of the same amenities as Scotland, she found fault with everything. She was brought over as a companion for her daughter, but Eustice soon found her negative attitude intolerable. Anne moved about the house like a ghost. That is, until Euphemia was born.
Euphemia was a tiny baby, having been born early. She was weak and tired, and very quiet. They worried she wouldn’t last long, so along with the nurse, they hired a doctor on staff. A portly Chinese man who visited the house twice a week. Anne, invigorated by her sudden necessity in the house, was the one to get up with the baby when she cried in the middle of the night. She toted the small baby around as if Effie were her own. This irritated Eustice, who refused to fire the nurse.
When Effie was 6, Anne became very ill. Eustice was preparing to send her back to Scotland, but before she left she fell into a coma and passed away after three days. Effie was distraught, and Eustice was relieved. She was already beginning to see her mother’s negativity rub off on her daughter. Eustice wanted her daughter to enjoy her life in China.
Effie was sent to a satellite school of the Chinese magical academy Kunlun. She attended some classes in basic Chinese, but many of the classes were taught in other languages to accommodate the expanding expat community. The curriculum was designed to better match that of western schools, so she took similar exams to the O.W.L.s, but they were perhaps more rigorous, and had emphasis on different aspects. She studied hard, and got decent marks with especially high marks in history courses, ancient runes and transfiguration.
Halfway through her 6th year, everything changed. Her father was caught in a homosexual relationship with a muggleborn fellow he worked with. A Mr. Philip J. Gordimer. More indiscretions came forward, some of which Effie always suspected were rumour. Her father lost his job, and moved them back to Edinburgh. He told his wife he wouldn’t be with another man. That it was a mistake. But Eustice begged him for a divorce, which he granted with much sorrow. Effie went with her mother back to Eustice’s family home, where they lived on the moors with her Aunt and Uncle and many cousins. Eustice, however, had grown accustomed to living a certain way. She met a wealthy man in London and remarried after only knowing him for 2 months. It was a giant scandal. Eustice lost even more favour with her family. Eustice moved Effie to London.
When Effie was getting ready to debut, her mother was a nervous wreck and payed little attention to Effie. Walter took advantage of her distraction and made passes at Effie. She felt uncomfortable and said as much to her mother, who simply thought she was acting out. She told her “if you want to move in with your father, go ahead, but you’ll be living in a den of debauchery and sin.” (Effie thought her mother could be quite dramatic at times). One night, Walter did try something with her. He came into her room in the middle of the night and when he forced himself on top of her, Effie managed to knee him in the groin and scratch him. She fled from the room and out of the house. She went in search of her father but was unable to locate him. Not knowing where to go, she reached out to her family in Scotland. The sent her enough money to pay for rent in a boarding house. Effie moved to Hogsmeade and started a desperate hunt for work. She worked waitress in The Three Broomsticks for a few months, before taking a position at Whizzhard Books, which fit her just fine. She loves to read, and she couldn’t think of a better job than to be surrounded by books all day.
She hasn’t spoken to her mother in over a year, as her mother refuses to speak with her. She still has not located her father. She communicates with her family in Scotland, but she feels they are practically strangers.
